I'm not a really big fan of onion soup and eating just a couple of bites is enough. But last night, I nearly ate my whole bowl! It took much longer to make than I anticipated, but it was pretty easy and worth any effort it took. I made french bread toastettes to float inside the soup and cover with cheese to brown on top. This soup was soooo good, soooo rich and filling, it could have been the meal instead of an appetizer. It was soooo good, I didn't have a single drop of soup left... every drop was eaten. Definitely a repeat dish!
I'm still learning lots of lessons as I am playing in the kitchen with Julia. Timing is one area I am improving in but still need lots of work in too! I seem to take an hour longer to prepare and serve these dishes than I anticipate. But I am learning to have nibbles ready as appetizers before the meal so my dining guests won't starve waiting for the meal to be finished. It's really hard to wait for the dinner to be finished because the wonderful smells that perfume the house while cooking these Julia dishes drive you crazy wanting to taste the food that accompany the aroma.
Am heading to Lexington this afternoon/evening, going to the movies with Amber and some of her friends. We are going to watch "The Time Travelers Wife", which is a book we have all read and feel it is our favorite read ever! Am sure the movie can't compare to the book, movies never do, but.... it will be fun to see all the same. We ladies are going to dinner before the movie, which means Joe is all on his own tonight... but he is very resourceful and will be just fine.
Making the Reine de Saba cake three times now, makes me want to bake more of Julia's desserts. That cake doesn't last more than a couple of days because it is just sooo good and I hate seeing my cake plate empty now. I have this adorable Charlotte pan that is just waiting for me to use. I think that will be on the menu soon!
