Today we celebrate Memorial Day for all the veterans who have served or, are serving our country to keep us safe and going about our normal business. THANK YOU!!!!!
But..... it is also a time to gather with family, friends, and neighbors to celebrate the beginning of 'summer'.... not the official end of spring.... but an emotional end of spring and the emotional start of summer. School is almost out and/or is already out for summer break.... graduations are being attended and celebrated..... tis the beginning of the 'wedding season'.... grills are uncovered and cleaned up.... pools are opened..... you can just feel the world sighing and singing.
Joe played in a golf tournament this morning/afternoon..... and is beaming a smile from ear to ear with winning First Place...... he had a great day of golfing personally, met new friends, and then came home to retell his day hole by hole. He rarely has time to relax these days.... so it was great to see him have such a good time.
Joe was the grill meister and I was the cook..... our menu was..... Fresh River Salmon (grilled)... BBQ Babyback Ribs (grilled).... Grilled Asparagus.... Angel Hair Pasta with Lemon, Olive Oil, and Fresh Parmsean Cheese (shaved)... Corn on the Cob.... Muscles.... and Citrus/Fennel Salad.... served with french bread toastettes and flatbread. DELISH After dinner I whipped up some fresh cream.... added a splash of vanilla and approx. 1/3 cup sugar..... then whipped til stiff peaks formed. Served the Whipped Cream over Angel Food Cake and Fresh Sliced Strawberries.
This is the first year in many that Joe and I have not hosted a Memorial Day Family Cookout gathering.... but with us being gone all weekend, all our children were all working, that we just decided to have a quiet day to recoup from the weekend. It turned out well... Joe really enjoyed the rare opportunity to play golf and hang with pals..... I chilled poolside with Kevin (Lauren's Finance).... I cooked a very tasty dinner.... that the girls ended up joining us for dinner after they got home from work. Now it's 9:45 and Joe and I are already in bed... he full out roar snoring.... me 2 minutes away from gentle snoring! LOL : )
THANK YOU again to all those who serve and have served to keep us free! Happy Memorial Day..... We are thinking of you!!!!

Girls Night Out - Sex and the City 2
Last night my 3 daughters and I had a rare "Girls Night Out" together to see the new movie "Sex and the City 2". We have all been faithful followers of the Sex and the City series when it was on HBO, and of course we all HAD to be at the opening night of both movies. It has become tradition to do a Girls Night Out for these movies, even when we were all in different states.
When the first movie came out a couple of years ago, I was in LA visiting with my youngest daughter who lived in LA at the time, and my other two daughters were in KY..... so we all went to the same show at the same time.... just in different states.... then we had a long phone coversation the next day to talk about the movie and our personal Sex and the City experience. When the first movie hit the screens a couple years ago you had to attend the movie in full Sex and the City wardrobe gala..... lots of chunky, cool vintage costume jewerly, trendy skirts/dresses, stylish purses/bags, and of course stilleto heels! The line to get a seat (after already purchasing the tickets the day before) was over an hour long.... and during that hour long wait a lot of oogling, gandering, and critquing of the other ladies (and gents) styles.... or lack of.... made the wait actually quite enjoyable. However.... watching the movie this time was less of the fashion statement, but still just as fun.
The movie was as hilariously good as the first and we all laughed through the whole movie. A bit predictable.... yes..... but..... again, it just felt like you were there with the charcters on screen, enjoying what true girlfriend friendships are all about. We may have been Mother and Daughters last night.... but we are also good friends, who enjoy each others company as much as whenever we get the opportunity.
Ok...... so I might have over bought at the concession stand with the popcorn..... but..... I LOVE popcorn and often eat it for dinner many nights when Joe is out of town and I'm home alone. I decided that since there were four of us, it would be easier to have 2 buckets of popcorn to share between two of us..... the buckets are as big as a bucket of chicken and all four of us would never have been able to eat our way through one bucket, much less two..... but it was easier to share than to continuously pass it back and forth. I'm still belching popcorn this morning! But the funniest thing is..... when the sweet little teen working the concession booth handed us our popcorn..... (and the girls were all gaped jawed and laughing at the amount of popcorn in BOTH buckets)..... she says to us..... "you know you get free refills"! LOL SERIOUSLY!!!! WHO could ever possibly eat that much popcorn at one sitting and then go back and ask for a refill???? TOO FUNNY!!!!! And it didn't help that we were all already quite full from our dinner of Chipolte either!
We went to the 8:15pm show, which meant we didn't get home til 11:00pm.... and it was such a lovely warm night, we sat outside on the patio for a few minutes and just chatted about the movie and how much fun we all had had. Lauren is moving to Akron in 2 weeks and this was one of our last chances to have a Girls Night Out all together for awhile. Akron is 4 - 4.5 hours drive, Lauren will be working fulltime so she won't likely get to come home for visits often. Or.... I should say.... often enough! : ) Although..... we are having a GIRLS WEEKEND next weekend to attend a childhood friends wedding. That weekend will be our last hurrah with just us girls for a long time.
I cherish all my Girls Night Out times with family and/or friends..... women just have a wonderful time bonding together over movies and/or dinners..... or even cups of coffee/tea. Cheers to all girlfriends and Girls Night Outs!

Meals on Wheels
Yesterday I did a cook-a-thon for 6 hours and then loaded up everything to deliver to Joe's parents in Louisville. His Mom is recovering from some major heart issues and his Dad has been dealing with his own major health issues for the past 3 years and neither of them are able to take care of each other, much less themselves. So that is the reason for the meals on wheels run to Louisville yesterday.
I forgot how much I enjoy just cooking and cooking and cooking all day like that because of Joe's hectic travel schedule these past several months and I haven't needed to cook with no one being home for dinner. It's just no fun to cook all day and have no one to eat the fruits of my labor, and I'm not a big eater, especially at night, so no need to cook big for myself, when a bag of popcorn serves me well for dinner!
I made a roast with huge whole mushrooms and this amazing sauce/gravy..... very rich, but perfect in flavor profile. To go with the roast, I made roasted poatoes, roasted veggies (carrots, celery, onion, broccoli), a tossed salad, mixed fresh cut up fruit, fresh bread (the kind from Kroger that you warm up in the oven), blueberry muffins (made from fresh blueberries).... and then I also made a pasta salad for his Mom who loves it so she would have something fresh and light to nibble on for lunches. The roast was pure perfection and the aroma of the roast with the gravy set the whole house to drool as I warmed it up. I was trying to make it tasty and healthy, so even tho we are having hot weather, I knew the roasted veggies would be healthier and go perfectly with the roast. Ok...... so the sauce/gravy isn't what you would consider the healthiest choice, it was quite rich..... but it put the flavor of the roast over the top of deliciousness! I usually make several batches of soup for my meals on wheels deliveries..... but I thought a good old fashioned roastbeef meal would make his Mom feel much better.
While the roast was cooking, an appliance repairman came to the house to fix my broken washer.... which took all of 15 minutes to repair, and then I was doing the mountain load of laundry that had piled up while it was broken. My daughter Jessica had the day off so she came over and we sat outside and visited for a bit, then I loaded up the car with all the delectable goodies and with my convertible top down, I drove to Louisville with the beautiful sun shining down on my face. It was such a fun drive with the wind blowing, my radio blasting and me singing the whole way totally off key and not caring!
I ate dinner with Joe's parents and enjoyed a very nice visit with them. I ran a couple of errands for his Mom and then headed over to my Mom's house to get in a quickie visit with my ailing Grandmother and my Mom, and then back on the road to home at 10:00pm (it is an hour and half drive home)..... but.... once again I had the radio blasting and singing off key all the way home.
It was one of those days that I accomplished soooo much, yet..... it was a fun day, spent with several family members..... I hit the bed completely exhausted, yet smiling from ear to ear. Today..... jetlag has decided to return and I'm slugging my way thru the day, but still managing to continue to check off things on my 'to do' list. I went and picked up my baskets of flowers to plant in my pots, picked up some new herb plants for my herb garden and am about to go meet with the florist for my daughters wedding flowers. The day is gorgeous... the sun is shining, the temperature is HOT.... just the way I love it and I finally feel like summertime has arrived! WOO HOO!!!!
It just feels soooo good to be soooo exhausted from doing good things for others. I have experienced my fair share of needing others to care give for me a year ago, and while it was wonderful that soooo many family and friends stepped up to help me out when I needed it...... I MUCH prefer being the care giver instead of the care needer.

Ljubjana Solvenia
Ljubjana (LOO-BLEE-ANA) Solvenia was SPECTACULAR!!! It is a true hidden treasure that not many people know about, much less have ever even heard of. This was a business trip for my husband and a pure pleasure trip for me as a tag along. I was the only spouse who went on this trip, therefore, I spent 3 days all to myself wandering around the streets of Ljubjana.... which just so happens to be "the safest" city in the world! NO KIDDING!!! The last bullet fired from a policeman was 5 years ago and it was shot up in the air.... there is practically zero crime in this area and they all speak some English...... which is good because all their words look like this....... ljzchjzbjai..... and sound like this..... scha, bla, zcha, blah, blah, blah.... all their words sound alike and sound like a mouth full of marbles!
On day one we (the whole business group) had a guided tour from this SUPER HOT young man (he was in his late 20's, early 30's).... who had this amazing thick curly/wavy hair and who spoke with the most delicious accent.... he rolled his R's alot, and I found myself just wanting to hear him talk... didn't care what he said, tried to pay attention to the details.... but those R's kept distracting me! But I did remember his remark about Ljubjana being the safest city in the world and the citizens are quite proud of that fact.
There is proof in the pudding that I was totally drooling over this young man when we got home and were looking at the photo's we had taken. I am not the photographer (I tend to cut people's heads off in every single photo.... probably cause I'm sooo short), but my husband Joe loves taking and looking at photo's. He thought it was too funny to sneak a picture of me totally absorbed (and drooling) while this young man spoke... no one else was around.... and there I am.... gawking up at him with this HUGE smile on my face! This picture is posted on FB for any of you who want to go take a look. Juan (pronounced yawn) took us on a walking tour all over the city and up the gazillion steps to the top of the city castle where we had a 180 degree view of the entire city. WOWZERS!!!! At the end I did ask him if I could take him home as a souvenir.... which of course he obviously did not take me up on!
Because of that wonderful walking tour, I was able to maneuver myself all over the city alone. I took a book with me and sat at an outside cafe reading and people watching, I shopped and I went to the cathedral everyday to light candles and say prayers. It was one of the most beautiful places that Joe and I have seen in all our travels around the world. I can't believe more people don't know about this little gem of a place.
The business conference ended on Friday, so Joe and I had all day Saturday to ourselves to explore the area more. We hit the streets early (8:00 am) and wandered down to the fresh market where we saw people setting up for a big festival that was taking place later in the day. They had these HUGE vats that they were preparing some sort of stew in. These vats were as big as me and they sat over an open fire and it was sooo cool watching the stew being prepared. We met another tour guide at 8:30 and drove an hour with him to the city of Bled. This fella was equally as nice, but no where near as eye appealing, nor did he have the delicious accent, but.... he did a wonderful job as well.
We first went to the castle of Bled, which sat on top of this HUGE solid and steep rock. We took several photo's of the view from there. The castle over looks this pristine clear lake (it's 7 miles around the enite lake) that was formed from a melted glacier, and in the middle of this lake there was this teeny tiny island... big enough only for the church which sat upon it. You had to take a boat over to the island and since there are no motors allowed on this lake, the boat was rowed by a single fella who stood on this small platform at the back of the boat and he rowed standing up!!! SERIOUSLY!!! It was incredible! Since it was just the 3 of us (Joe, me and our guide) we joined a church tour bus of Hungarians.... they didn't seem to mind one bit that we were amongst them. The church on the island was very quaint and everything inside was gilded in gold and of the baroque style.... BEAUTIFUL!!! If you rang the church bell three times you were allowed to make a wish.... so of course.... I rang the bell.... which you had to do by pulling on this long rope hanging from the ceiling. LOL I'm so small that when I was yanking on the bell cord it actually picked me up off the ground and I was dangling up in the air! And yes.... Joe has a picture of that too!
On our boat trip back to the shore, the Hungarian church group broke out in spontaneous singing of Hungarian hymns...... it was such a gorgeous day, the lake was sparkling, the sky was as blue as a robins egg, the Alps were in the distance, and it felt like we were suddenly in a scene from "The Sound of Music".... I kid you not.... you could not pay for an experience like that! The two boats were competing with their singing, they were clapping and smiling, and laughing and it was absolutely delightful! And then...... cue the swan.... out of no where, here comes this one lone, very regal swan gliding past our boat. The Hungarians were all in the mid to late 70's and they made us feel like we were with my Mom and Aunt and their church group. After our tour of Bled our guide took us for coffee/tea and their famous creme cake, which is a layered dessert they are known for (they take claim of actually creating this dessert) and the layers are this amazing vanilla custard with this amazing pastry creme on top, sandwiched between to flaky layers of thin pastry dough..... YUMMY YUMMY YUMMY in our tummies!
After Joe and I returned to Ljubjana we went back to the market and the festival to see the activies going on. The stew we saw being prepared earlier in the day was now ready for eating, so.... Joe and I bought a bowl to share and it came with two slices of fresh rye bread. OMGOODNESS was that stew DELISH!!!!! So delish that we couldn't slurp it down fast enough and sop up the gravy with that wonderfully fresh bread. They had a live poka band playing and poka dancers and it made us feel like we were back in Cincinnati attending the Oktoberfest. You could say this was truly a "perfect" day!
But alas..... all good things must come to an end..... so at 4:00 am on Sunday morn (10:00 pm Saturday evening Cincinnati time) we started our journey back home and arrived back home at 7:00 pm Sunday night..... 22 hours of traveling..... I can't believe I'm actually sitting here typing this blog because I'm so jetlagged I absolutely feel drunk! Any typo's or spelling errors I blame completely on the jetlag!
As amazing of a trip that this was...... there truly is no place like home (heel click, heel click), there's no place like home (heel click, heel click)..... home again, home again jiggity jig!

Mother's/Daughter's/Women's Banquet
Last night my youngest daughter and I drove to Louisville to attend a Mother's/Daugher's/Women's Banquet at my Mom's church..... which is the church I grew up in..... and the church that most of my family still attend. It was sooooo sweet and heart warming. Lauren and I chatted about it all the way home, which is an hour and a half drive.... when we pulled in the drive way we were still giggling and chatting about the evening and what fun we had.
My cousin's daughter (Abbey) performed a couple of songs on stage with two other young ladies, and then more young ladies joined them on stage for another song. VERY sweet and they were all sooooo cute in there pretty dresses, and rolled hair. Makes me really really really miss my own girls at this age. They did an AWESOME job too. At the end they were all presented with a single red rose, which all of them carried around as if those roses were the most precious gift they had received! They were all very proud of their special flowers.
The men of the church (aka .... the husbands! LOL) served the ladies all night long, bringing us drinks, cake and carrying away our dirty dishes. One of the husbands was dressed as "The Pillsbury Dough Boy".... both Lauren and I have pictures with him..... but then the funniest thing is when his wife told him OUT LOUD that the back of his outfit pants had split and his undies were showing..... and by the way.... he is a white tightie man! All the men were sooooooo adorable and did a great job!!. Then they had a door prize drawing..... which they had soooo many prizes, I think just about everyone walked away with a treasure. Both Lauren and I won.... I won a hand painted BEAUTIFUL apron.... just perfect for the Chef.... Lauren also won an apron, but her's was reversible and really cute too, and she also won a red plastic spatula..... sooo perfect for the bride to be! Lauren loved her apron soooo much (which matched her shoes perfectly) that she wore it all the way home!!! I think she almost wore it to bed too! When I got up this morning she had it on again...... I think she really likes that apron!
All the ladies and daughers were all dressed up in dresses and pant outfits... I mostly remember just looking around the room and seeing sooo many happy women having a good time celebrating each other. I love seeing all the folks who were members of this church when I attended as a young girl and teen and are still there, especially my sunday school teachers and youth group leaders. Lauren and I also were able to spend some time with a couple of our cousins and Aunt..... we don't get to see them nearly enough! Grandma.... we missed you and celebrate you everyday and will do so forever!
Thank you Fisherville Baptist Church for hosting such a wonderful event. Lauren and I enjoyed ourselves immensely! Thank you Nancy for reminding me to get back to blogging! However.... I will be out of the country next week and there will be another long pause in the blogging.... but I promise to resume it once again when I get back home! Hugs to all my readers, I deeply appreciate all your comments and support!!!
WOMEN ROCK! : )
